Future Cubes
In the Box, Instead of out
What do you need for shaping the future? An old barn with plain white walls, some paint, post-its and great minds from all over the world that are passionate about mobile communication.
In the surreal environment of a 115 year old castle’s barn, somewhere in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, about 250 entrepreneurs, strategists, creative thinkers, innovators and other visionary MLOVErs took the challenge to imagine, how mobile technology will change our future.
Thinking about the future of highend technology in a barn of a pretty aged castle seems a rather radical contrast at first, but creates its own dynamic in the creative process at this very unique event. From research we know that creative outcomes are a function of personal abilities and the context, in which we create. In the FUTURE CUBES at MLOVE ConFestival we created an environment that provided the attendees with enough room to generate and share ideas and that inspires and stimulates through exploring beyond the comfort zone.
In teams attendees developed solutions and creative ideas on how mobile technology will influence our thinking about
- advertising
- health
- education
- music & entertainment
- gaming
- sustainability
- data safety/ownership
- research & development
in the future. During the idea generation process the focus was solely on the topic of each cube.
The remoteness of the castle barn, but also the fact that you can freely use the space and materials around you without being led by any kind of structure stimulates cognitive flexibility and frees up motivation to create. Cognitive flexibility and motivation are important resources in an ideation process and enhance the chance of highly original ideas for new products or new ways of using mobile technology in the future.
The process was moderated by Julia Leihener from Telekom Creation Center in Berlin and Jonathan MacDonald from EverySingleOneOfUs in London. The ideas aimed to proactively shape the future by discovering latent customer demands instead of just reacting to wellknown needs.
Future Cubes: Stimulation of cognitive flexibility and motivation to create.

In the process the groups built up intrinsic motivation, that means that they enjoyed the process of creating itself, instead of solely performing due to external pressures. This became evident when after two long days and one afternoon of intensive working together without many breaks they resisted to finish to stop working on the projects. Instead they asked for additional time and after over two hours of idea generation presented their results in the forum in the most enthusiastic and inspiring way.
Although the brainstorming in groups approach is widely-used in organizations, it falls short in some parts. One of its downsides is the fact that in a group discussion only one person can speak at a time.
To spice this creative exercise up a little bit, an MLOVE award was an- nounced for the best idea. To embrace one of the MLOVE leading principles “It’s about the people” we let everybody vote, instead of relying on a smaller jury.
While being known for killing intrinsic motivation and therefore creativity, competition can be stimulating, when it is integrated within a cooperative environment. In the Future Cubes attendees chose the topic they were most passionate about and worked on their ideas together and therefore could benefit form both: collective collaboration and the activating element of competition.
Finally, four ideas made it to the TOP 3 neck-to-neck:
WINNER:
- a holistic approach to entertainment through the integration of a watching (video), a reading (books), a sound (song) and a gaming experience (for MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT)
RUNNERS-UP:
- a spanning the generations, integrative approach to education in schools (for EDUCATION)
- an innovative application that analyzes individual stress patterns and demands and suggests individual measures for stress reduction (for HEALTH)
- new applications that allow to com- bine technology with human factors with unlimited possibilities, such as embanking the spreading of viruses through early virus detection (for SINGULARITY)
