$1M donation of Refugee Containers
Today, a yearlong passion of mine has been rewarded.
At MLOVE Future City Campus in Hamburg today, a generous donor couple announced that they are funding 10 Refugee First Response Centers (RFRC) to be installed in refugee reception centers the City of Hamburg.
The Dorit and Alexander Otto Foundation announced, that they are donating 10 custom made 30 foot medical aid containers plus 10 waiting room containers in the value of $1 million to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Dorit Otto (right), CEO of the foundation, and Senator Cornelia Prüfer-Stocks (pictured left) of the Hamburg Health Authority presented the donation to the assembled media.
The containers are an awesome collaboration that is now ready to scale (read more about the world wide premiere here at www.rfrc.eu).

A Passion for Meaning & Shipping Containers
We are proud to be part of the initiative that brought this idea to live within just six weeks in the fall of 2015. The first pilot unit that was assembled and “hacked” on the MLOVE Future City campus was donated by Cisco to the City of Hamburg. After testing and in collaboration with the University Medical Center of Hamburg-Eppendorf and the German Red Cross, the City of Hamburg had proof points that the RFRC will save money and can provide much higher levels of service to refugee patients and the doctors as well.
I am fond of thinking back to the last days of August of 2015 when we hatched the idea with Mirko Bass of Cisco in a few night shifts and collaborated with the Hamburg Smart City ecosystem. Besides Cisco, the partners in this project are avodaq and the Austrian video interpreter service of SAVD, plus support from the Health Authority of Hamburg together with the UKE medical team. It is rewarding to design and scale this meaningful work.
Remember the MLOVE Container Passion?
As many of you know, at the very first MLOVE ConFestival in 2010 we had already a shipping container on display that showed a “PowerLife” solution to provide electricity, clean water and broadband connectivity. That container featured a big solar panel, a huge battery inside and the clean water filter system.
On the group photo here all of the passionate MLOVE community is pictured around what started a theme around container design.
Then in 2013, we revived the theme again and brought a shipping container that we painted MLOVE red and the iconic heart shape. During that time we worked on a concept for a new mobile expo for Mobile World Foundation.
This was an exciting project and we very much enjoyed working with the team of Aleix Valls in Barcelona. When we presented the idea together with the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation at Mobile World Congress in 2013 the whole booth was built up in a shipping container theme and a cool experience for all. As you know, the concept did come to fruition in what is now 4YFN – 4 years from now, that will happen again in a few short weeks.
Join us in Barcelona at our Booth at 4YFN
And in the spirit of our theme, our booth will feature again a shipping container as a workshop and meeting room again this year.
Come join us on Monday; February 22 at 11 AM for a special reception to present the RFRC project to the media and all people that are interested in using technology for meaningful applications to make our world a better place.
Our booth is located at 4YFN (Fira Montjuic) at booth #S20.
Register here for the reception at Eventbrite.
