How Problematic is it to Share via Mobile Privately in a Public World?!

Whether we like it or not, the world around us has become obsessed with sharing every moment with everyone. Entire lives are documented to the minute and shared on every platform possible: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. But, how much of it is really relevant to us? How much of this do we want to see? What are the ramifications of such oversharing?

Avoid oversharing

Every time I go on Facebook I feel like I’m searching for a familiar face in an unfamiliar crowd. I have to sift through my neighbor’s pictures of his kids at the beach, my colleague’s drunken pictures from his latest vacation, and the endless “happy family” photos posted by my old high school girlfriend that I haven’t spoken to in years. All this and I still end up missing the picture posted by my sister of her kid’s dance recital- the one picture I actually WANTED to see. Furthermore, all this oversharing can actually get people in trouble. Imagine the countless job opportunities people have missed out on because the HR manager was clever enough to look up her leads on Facebook. Or the number of people fired for badmouthing their company on social media or posting inappropriate pictures on their profiles.Screen-Shot-2013-03-11-at-12.10.00-AM

Thinking of kids…

And last but not least, we allow ourselves to post and share about others, but what if they don’t want us to? I know Facebook allows you to review posts before they appear on your page, but what about those who don’t have profiles yet? I’m talking about our kids. My daughters are almost at the age of being socially conscious and when they open their first Facebook page I can tell you right now, they will be extremely embarrassed to find their baby pictures all over the web. I’m not saying that being a part of the public world is bad. I just think it shouldn’t be a total submission; Take the good and lose the bad. Enjoy the timely, communal aspect of the public world, but use it wisely. Sift through the information mayhem and share what is relevant and appropriate.

My solution

I recently launched Familio.com which tries to provide a solution. It is a private and easy photo and video sharing platform for families and it is built to be user friendly for all family members, old and young. Both the mobile and web application are easy enough for my parents to figure out, while also being engaging and updated enough to keep the younger generation interested. It keeps my family connected and updated on ALL family moments by providing notifications when something new comes up. And the best part is – it’s private. I choose who will be part of my Familio and be able to view my moments. So it’s not that problematic to share privately via mobile in the public world- you just have to do it right. For example, this blog post from MLOVE will go on Facebook, but my baby’s picture in the bath will be for my family’s eyes only.

How many photos a week do you see on social Platforms that make you think ‘I wish these were shared privately’?
